The historic village of Chimayo is just 15 minutes north of Cities of Gold Casino Hotel in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Founded in the late 17th century by Spanish settlers, Chimayo became famous for its red chile, fine weaving, horse and sheep farming, and bountiful fruit orchards. The tiny village is also known for its traditional Hispanic and Tewa Indian arts and crafts, and the chapel Santuario de Chimayó, thought to be a divine and sacred destination for thousands of pilgrims hoping to experience its miraculous healing benefits and spiritual restoration.
Perhaps best known as the home of the Manhattan Project where the first atomic bomb was developed during World War II, the city of Los Alamos, also dubbed “the Atomic City”, has become a high-tech hub for research, technology and science. The Poeh Museum features traditional and contemporary Native American Pueblo art and culture with a major focus on the artists of the six Tewa-speaking Pueblos of Northern New Mexico. The Santa Fe Indian Market takes place every August and includes 1,200 artists from 100 tribes. Dating back to 1922, the annual event has grown into the world's largest market of Native American art and attracts an estimated 100,000 visitors to Santa Fe. Gallery owners and collectors swarm to buy directly from the artists who display their work in over 600 booths featuring jewelry, textiles, baskets, beadwork, quillwork, pueblo wooden carvings, sculpture, drums, hides, leather goods, and more.
The annual 2-day Spanish Market is the oldest and largest juried Spanish Market in the US and attracts more than 70,000 visitors from all over the world. Each July, the Market features traditional handmade art from 350 local Hispanic artists as well as live music, dance, art demonstrations, and regional foods.
The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a nine-day event that takes place every autumn, and is the largest gathering of hot air balloons in the world. New Mexico’s scenic surroundings make a stunning backdrop for the vivid and colorful hot air balloons that fill the sky. Watch in wonder or hitch a ride and check out the view from up high.
